Shinola Duck Automatic: Miyota 9015 and Influencer Strategy in Detroit’s Volume Play

October 6, 2026·4 min read

Shinola revealed the Duck Automatic on October 5, 2026, moving one of its highest-volume quartz platforms into mechanical territory with a 38 mm case and Japanese automatic calibres. The four-piece collection deploys the Miyota 9015 in three configurations—PVD gold, stainless steel and alabaster, and stainless steel and black—while a fourth exclusive gift-set iteration uses a movement with approximately 80 hours of power reserve. The brand describes itself as one of the first American labels to adopt the new 80-hour calibre, though the identity of that movement remains unspecified in the launch material.

The 9015 has been widely deployed by microbrand and fashion-watch manufacturers since its introduction, and its presence in a Detroit-assembled case signals Shinola’s intent to compete on movement transparency rather than movement mystique. The 80-hour variant—likely a Miyota 9039 or similar extended-reserve calibre—adds differentiation to the gift-set SKU without fragmenting the service and parts infrastructure across the line.

Dana Mosa-Basha, Shinola’s director of marketing, framed the launch as an evolution rather than a departure. “The Duck has become one of our most recognizable and best-selling watch platforms, so bringing it into automatic felt like a natural next step,” she told WWD. “We wanted to preserve what people already love about the Duck—its versatility, color and slightly irreverent personality—while evolving it into a more elevated mechanical timepiece.” The 38 mm case represents a reimagining of the Duck architecture, though the source material does not detail how the proportions or construction differ from the quartz predecessor. What matters from a manufacturing perspective is that the case accommodates both the 9015 and the taller 80-hour movement, suggesting either a modular case design or sufficient internal clearance to handle both calibre heights without visible case-thickness variation across the range.

Campaign Architecture and Audience Expansion

Shinola paired the mechanical launch with a campaign built around four personalities from entertainment, comedy, music and internet culture: Kareem Rahma, creator and host of “Subway Takes” and “Keep the Meter Going”; Tefi Pessoa, recently featured on “Love Island USA”; rapper Nems, whose song “Bing Bong” went viral during a Knicks win; and internet creator Benton McClintock. The campaign and accompanying short film were created by Jonathan Bailey, Shinola’s creative director, alongside brand partner GentleForces. Danni Mohammed, founder and CEO of GentleForces, noted that each Shinola campaign brings “a new perspective and flavor” through the talent selected.

Mosa-Basha explained the selection rationale: “We weren’t looking for four people who felt like traditional watch ambassadors. We were looking for people with incredibly distinct voices who have built audiences because they are unmistakably themselves. Kareem, Tefi and Nems each occupy very different corners of culture, but they share that quality. Their audiences aren’t just following what they wear or what they recommend—they’re following their perspective, humor and personality.” The campaign theme, described as celebrating “going off script,” centers on stepping away from endless demands that require time and attention—a positioning that leans into lifestyle rather than horology.

This is influencer strategy as audience-building infrastructure. For a brand manufacturing in Detroit and competing against licensed fashion labels and mass-market Japanese makers, the campaign represents a calculated bet that mechanical credibility can be communicated through personality and narrative rather than through movement decoration or heritage storytelling.

Detroit Manufacturing and Volume Trajectory

Mosa-Basha reported that Shinola’s business is trending upward more than 30 percent year over year, with new customer growth increasing by 47 percent. She emphasized the brand’s “unique position” as a Detroit design brand with American production that extends into leather goods and jewelry, and stated that future investment will focus on strengthening authority in watches, introducing product innovation, and expanding the audience while maintaining roots in Detroit manufacturing and craft.

The Duck Automatic launched with activations in Detroit, including a duck-watching pop-up, and a New York Watch Week celebration co-hosted by campaign face Nems. The collection became available for purchase in-store and online on October 8, 2026. For manufacturing partners and brands evaluating mechanical expansion in the fashion-watch segment, the Duck Automatic offers a case study in calibre selection, case-size discipline, and influencer-led go-to-market strategy. Whether the strategy scales beyond the launch window will depend on service infrastructure, movement reliability in the field, and whether the influencer audiences convert to repeat customers—but the architecture itself is coherent and replicable for any brand seeking volume in the mechanical fashion segment with a manufacturing partner capable of movement assembly and quality control.
